Curry Kiste on Westphalweg in Mariendorf is one of Berlin's most authentic Currywurst stands: family-run, no frills, with warm ketchup from the pot, and loyal regulars who have been coming back for decades.

A Family Stand with History in Mariendorf

Those looking for a good Currywurst in Berlin usually think of Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer Berg first. However, a detour to Mariendorf is well worth it. Curry Kiste on Westphalweg has been a firm institution there since 1990. At that time, the Muhs family took over the snack bar, which had frequently changing owners before that. Since 2000, son Markus has continued to run the stand, now already in its second generation. The result: around 75 percent regular customers, which is not a given in Berlin.

The location is extremely convenient. Directly at the Westphalweg U-Bahn station, you’re just a few steps from the counter. Those who have time can also visit the nearby Trabrennbahn Mariendorf (Mariendorf Trotting Track), a listed monument from 1913, where the German Trotting Derby takes place annually. An afternoon with Currywurst and horse racing sounds like a solid Berlin day.

What to Eat at Curry Kiste

The offerings at Curry Kiste are classic and straightforward. The main focus is, of course, the Currywurst in Berlin, optionally with or without casing. The sauce comes warm from the pot, generously ladled on, not an industrial product. What particularly impressed us is the honesty of this sauce: spicy, tomato-based, with real heat. Additionally, there are different spice levels thanks to chili powder, which, unfortunately, is not always standard for Berlin Currywurst stands.

Besides Currywurst, there are also Curry Frikadellen (meatballs) and French fries. Prices are in the typical Berlin snack bar range. Vegetarian options are less of a focus in the assortment, but those looking for an authentic, meat-based Berlin Currywurst will be very satisfied here. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM; the stand is closed on weekends.
