Where books and flowers were once sold, one of the most beautiful breakfast cafés in the Bergmannkiez now stands: Das Gretel focuses on a nostalgic vintage atmosphere with absolute breakfast favorites like Eggs Benedict on homemade potato rösti or newly interpreted French toasts.
Das Gretel: Breakfast with Neighborhood Vibe in Kreuzberg
Das Gretel Café is one of the coziest breakfast cafés in Berlin. Located on the corner of Hagelberger Straße, the café looks as if it has always been there. Before, this address was first an antiquarian bookshop and then a flower shop. Since February 2020, breakfast has been served professionally here. What remained from the predecessor is the large old wooden buffet, which was protected as a historical monument and now fills the most beautiful wall in the room. The name comes from the Grimm’s fairy tale “Clever Gretel”.
Eggs Benedict, French Toast and Homemade Cake
Breakfast is more ambitious than the cozy setting might suggest. The Eggs Benedict are served not on muffins, but on homemade potato rösti, optionally with salmon or bacon. French Toast is available in sweet and savory versions, for example, with gratinated mountain cheese, roasted mushrooms and honey mustard, or with goat cheese. Also on offer are croissant sandwiches, homemade cake, and coffee. If you come spontaneously, you should bring time. On weekends, the place is full – reservations are recommended!
