A piece of jungle is hidden in Steglitz-Zehlendorf: The Great Tropical House in the Botanical Garden Berlin is one of the largest self-supporting greenhouses in the world, exchanging Berlin's winter grey for 25-meter-high tree giants and tropical warmth.

Sometimes you don’t need to travel far. The Great Tropenhaus maintains a subtropical climate all year round, making it probably the most reliable place in the city to warm up. It was built between 1905 and 1907 according to plans by the Royal Building Councilor Alfred Koerner, spanning a floor area of approximately 1,750 square meters with a volume of 40,000 cubic meters.

Behind the heavy entrance door, moist tropical air immediately greets you. The giant bamboo grows up to 30 centimeters on good days and has now reached 25 meters, some plants in the house are over 150 years old. The tour leads from the Caribbean to Central and South America, then on to Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

Practical Information for Visiting the Tropenhaus

The Botanical Garden in Steglitz-Zehlendorf covers 43 hectares, over 20,000 plant species, and 15 display greenhouses. All greenhouses, including the Tropenhaus, are included in the regular admission price.

Adults pay 10 Euros, reduced tickets are 5 Euros, and children up to 14 years old get in for free. From October to March, the garden is open daily from 09:00 to 19:00, and the greenhouses close at 18:00.
