For over 100 years, the chocolate manufactory in Wilmersdorf has stood for artisanal Berlin chocolate culture: dark, intensely flavored recipes, a listed Bauhaus interior, and a family spirit that can still be felt in every bar today.

Erich Hamann Bitter Chocolates: Berlin’s Oldest Chocolate Manufactory

At Brandenburgische Straße 17 stands a factory store that takes craft and history seriously. Since 1928, the chocolate manufactory has been located there in the so-called Erich-Hamann-Haus in Berlin-Wilmersdorf. The sales shop on the ground floor was designed by Johannes Itten in 1928 in the Bauhaus style and is still operated in its original condition today. This is not a nostalgia gimmick, but lived continuity.

Maple wood, bird’s-eye maple, glass surfaces and silver-colored profiles characterize the room; two almost ceiling-high round display cases accentuate the entrance area. Whoever enters immediately notices: nothing is staged here. The building and its furnishings are listed, featuring clear lines, dark wood, and factual presentation.

Dark Chocolate according to Original Recipe: The Assortment

Erich Hamann’s dark chocolate specialties have been produced in Berlin for over 100 years, with only a small interruption, following a traditional recipe. The assortment extends far beyond classic bitter chocolate. The manufactory is known for dark and milk chocolates, as well as up to 60 different pralines and individual chocolates. Particularly popular are the bark chocolate, mocha beans, and rum truffles.

The packaging design of the chocolates dates back to the early 1950s and was designed by Erich Hamann’s wife Anna. Therefore, every bar that goes over the counter here also has visual recognition value. The recipe that Hamann once developed has remained unchanged to this day. So, whoever is looking for an authentic Berlin food outlet with real character will find in Erich Hamann Bitter Chocolates a place that is simply unparalleled in this city.
