At Almstadtstraße 3, between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt in Berlin-Mitte, resides Berlin's most consistent fashion visionary: Esther Perbandt has been showcasing avant-garde, gender-neutral black collections here for over 18 years, conceiving fashion as an act of art.
Berlin’s Queen of Black in Berlin-Mitte
Esther Perbandt founded her eponymous fashion and jewelry label in Berlin in 2004. After stints in Moscow and Paris, she returned to her hometown. What has been created in Almstadtstraße since then can hardly be described as an ordinary fashion shop. For over 18 years, this space has been more than a store: it is a studio, office, and archive all at once. The flagship store feels more like a gallery. Those who climb the few steps immediately feel the atmosphere shift: the street noise gives way to an intimate, almost shielded feeling.
For more than a decade, Perbandt has exclusively designed black collections, earning her the title „Queen of Black”. Those familiar with Berlin fashion from this house know: black here does not mean monotony. Instead, one discovers textures and nuances of black, as well as Esther’s statement jewelry. The flagship store presents Perbandt’s dark, architectural designs, which impress with dramatic silhouettes and a monochromatic palette.
Berlin Fashion with Attitude: Craftsmanship, Sustainability, and Made-to-Measure
Perbandt combines traditional tailoring, inspired by men’s fashion craftsmanship, with digital innovation, while remaining committed to European production and sustainability. The assortment includes much more than just clothing. In the store, Perbandt presents her ready-to-wear collections for women, unisex styles, bags, and accessories. For those seeking something even more personal: appointments for custom-made pieces can be arranged directly with Esther in the quiet, intimate setting of the store. Additionally, Perbandt connects fashion, performance, and vision in her work: she understands her designs as a post-feminist, gender-independent act, where personality, autonomy, and individuality are central.
