Founded in 1962 as a private theatre, the Schaubühne is considered an innovative theatre with a politically and socially committed program.
The Schaubühne became famous under artistic director Peter Stein. Since 1999, the Schaubühne has been under the artistic direction of Thomas Ostermeier.
The name of choreographer Sasha Waltz is also closely linked to the Schaubühne; she was part of the Schaubühne’s artistic direction with Ostermeier until 2004. At that time, the theatre developed into a contemporary spoken word and dance theatre.
With more than 30 guest performances each season, the Schaubühne is today one of the leading German-language stages.
