Germany's first beach bar has been located directly on the Spree in Berlin-Mitte since 2002, opposite the Bode Museum: sand underfoot, real palm trees, fairy lights, and free open-air salsa and tango evenings. No other place in the city combines a museum backdrop with a summer feeling so effortlessly.
Strandbar Mitte: The Mother of All Berlin Beach Bars
Those who know Berlin’s beach bars know their origin: Strandbar Mitte is considered by many to be the „mother of all beach bars” in the city – and rightly so, as it was the first beach bar in Germany. Since 2002, it has brought a southern way of life to the Spree and has been an indispensable part of the Berlin summer ever since. The premises at Monbijoustraße 3 in Mitte show no signs of fatigue. Located directly on the Spree and equipped with palm trees, fairy lights, and beach chairs, the location still feels as if the concept had just been invented.
The place is regularly praised for its picturesque backdrop, with views of the river, Museum Island, and historical buildings. So, if you thought you needed a museum ticket for this panorama, you’re mistaken. During the day, relaxed chilling in the sand prevails; in the evenings, things get moving.
Dancing, Cocktails, and Free Entry
The bar is known for its open-air dance floor, where various dance styles such as tango, salsa, and swing are showcased, often with taster classes. These evenings are not only especially atmospheric under the summer starry sky but also a free event for everyone. Participation is expressly encouraged – those who prefer to watch do so equally relaxed with a cocktail in hand. The combination of a bar, pizzeria, and dance operations ensures a well-rounded overall experience.
Everything feels very casual and non-commercial – and that’s precisely what gives this Berlin beach bar its charm. However, it can get crowded, especially in the evenings and during popular dance events. If you want to secure a good spot, it’s better to come early. Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 2 PM, Saturday and Sunday from 12 PM, each until 10 PM.
