In December 2006, Café Tasso opened on Frankfurter Allee, a few steps from Frankfurter Tor. Since then, it has been a café, restaurant, and second-hand bookshop all in one. Over 20,000 used books are spread across the terrace, ground floor, and three basement rooms, each book costing 2.50 Euros. On the terrace, you’ll find crime novels, thrillers, historical novels, romance novels, as well as children’s and travel books. In the basement, fiction, classics, poetry, theater, history, philosophy, and foreign language literature await. If you pull a novel from the shelf in the café, you can start reading it right at your table and take it with you for little money.

Organic Cuisine, Inclusion, and Culture for Donations

Café Tasso belongs to SinneWerk gGmbH, an inclusion enterprise where people with and without disabilities work together on equal terms. The kitchen and beverages are organic-certified. The menu includes breakfast such as the Allee for 12.80 Euros, quiche with salad for 10.50 Euros, and cakes according to the daily offer; a large coffee costs 3.10 Euros. In the evenings, the café becomes a venue for concerts, readings, theater, and exhibitions. No admission fee is charged; instead, the artists ask for a donation. The reading series ‘Lesen auf LUNGE’ runs regularly, and rotating exhibitions hang on the walls.
