The principle is captivating and surprisingly little known in Berlin: What isn’t sold by evening goes for less on the same day. This is exactly how Hekticket operates, with its pavilion located directly at the subway entrance of Zoologischer Garten station on Hardenbergplatz. The establishment itself calls the point of sale a culture kiosk, and the core of its offering is last-minute tickets on the day of the performance, many of which go over the counter at half price. Hekticket has been around since 1991, supported by over two hundred cultural organizers, and the Hardenbergplatz location is, according to its own chronicle, the fourteenth shop of the establishment. Two limitations are part of this, and they are important: The kiosk is only open for a few afternoon hours and not every day of the week, and online sales are currently not active. The establishment announces a return to online sales but does not provide a date. So, anyone who wants a last-minute ticket has to go there. In return, any service fees that would otherwise be incurred with online purchases are waived.

From the Philharmonie to Bar jeder Vernunft

The range is the real reason why the trip is worthwhile. In advance sales and last-minute ticket sales, concerts, club gigs, comedy, theater, and musicals appear side-by-side, and the list of participating venues reads like a cross-section of the city: Theater des Westens, Estrel Showtheater, Philharmonie, TIPI, Wintergarten Varieté, Renaissance-Theater, Bar jeder Vernunft, ufaFabrik, Berliner Kriminal Theater, Mehringhof Theater, Berliner Kabarett Anstalt, Theater am Frankfurter Tor, Galli Theater, Kleines Theater, and the Radialsystem. So, if you’re undecided and want to be spontaneous, you’ll find a curated selection of what’s still available this evening – and often pay half price for it. This makes Hekticket one of the few places where a spontaneous theater evening is affordable even on a small budget. Getting there couldn’t be easier, as the U-Bahn and S-Bahn stop directly next to Zoologischer Garten station. Those coming by car will find ample parking on Hardenbergplatz, according to the establishment.
