Dae Mon: Where Asian Finesse Meets Berlin’s Evening Culture

Dae Mon at Monbijoupark is barely visible from the street. A discreet light installation above the entrance is the only hint. Inside, this understatement continues: subdued lighting, dark-painted walls, seating by Hans J. Wegner. The dark, minimalist interior creates an intimate, almost meditative atmosphere that frames special occasions with the necessary seriousness. Large-format photographs by Berlin artist Tina Winkhaus and sophisticated light installations in the long corridor complete the picture.

Once started as an exclusive Korean restaurant, Dae Mon today stands for a cuisine that owner Stefan Reinhardt calls “Open-Minded Cuisine”: The menu combines the characteristic elements of Asian cuisine, namely acidity, sweetness, and spiciness, with regional products and culinary curiosity. The name itself is programmatic: “Dae“ means “big“ in Korean, “Mon“ is the Japanese word for “gate“.

Multi-Course Menu for Sophisticated Evenings

The two chefs Samuel Haas and Philipp Steixner, both from Austria, have developed an impressive 8-course menu that takes guests on a sensory journey. While Haas convinces with his passion for unusual flavors and original combinations, Steixner is a master of presentation and technique. The menu changes about four times a year, with details adapting to the market. For those who don’t want wine, there’s also an alternative: The restaurant offers a carefully curated cold tea pairing of Asian tea varieties, which is a real highlight, especially for those without alcohol. This makes Dae Mon one of Berlin’s most compelling addresses when the evening truly matters.
