Halali: Austrian Cuisine You Wouldn’t Expect in Berlin

Wirtshaus Halali on Königstraße in Berlin-Wannsee is no ordinary restaurant. The designation “Wirtshaus“ (inn/tavern) is a bit misleading: in truth, Halali is a truly good restaurant with fine, upscale cuisine. Halali is thus one of the serious addresses for the original Wiener Schnitzel in Berlin. Master chef Johannes Schubert, a native of Vienna, places great importance on fresh and high-quality ingredients and always cooks himself. At Halali, cooking is still a craft. The schnitzel doesn’t just appear on the table somehow. For connoisseurs, it’s understood: it is cut from the hip. It comes with warm cucumber-potato salad, and those with a smaller appetite can also order a smaller portion. The Wiener Schnitzel is as it should be: thin and tender. Nothing more is needed.

More Than Schnitzel: Classics, Seasonal Dishes, and Sweets

Besides the schnitzel, the menu offers the full breadth of Austrian soul food. Delicacies like the tenderly boiled Tafelspitz or an authentic Kaiserschmarrn are among the classics. Homemade butter spaetzle with spicy mountain cheese, crispy fried onions, and a small salad are on the menu, even vegan upon request. Seasonal game dishes and fresh fish are also added. Paired with wines from Austria’s best growing regions and Austrian draft beer. Those who come on Sundays get an extra treat: On Sundays, Halali offers a freshly roasted pork. The ambiance matches the offerings. The rustic restaurant features five separate dining rooms, some with particularly cozy seating areas. Table reservation is mandatory, however: Halali strongly recommends making a reservation in advance, as capacities are very limited.
