Where Pankow meets Prenzlauer Berg, Emils Biergarten was one of Berlin's most atmospheric outdoor venues: in the courtyard of the listed Willner Brewery, between old industrial buildings and large lime trees.

Emil’s Beer Garden: Beer, Pizza and Brewery Charm in Pankow

Emil’s Beer Garden first opened its doors in 2013 on the border between Prenzlauer Berg and Pankow. It was operated by Christian Zeller and his WBB Willner Brewery Berlin on the premises of the former wheat beer brewery. So, anyone looking for a beer garden in Berlin with character was in the right place here. The beer garden offered a mix of benches, garden chairs, and sun loungers, either in the shade or in the sun.

The offerings were straightforward and convincing. Good beer and homemade pizza were the main reasons to visit. Service was directly at the counter; the self-service approach was part of the concept. There was also wine and non-alcoholic beverages at fair prices.

History and Neighborhood: What Became of the Willner Brewery

The beer garden was named after the Willner Brewery, built by Emil Willner at the end of the 19th century. The garden was initially in operation until 1993 and reopened in 2013 as Emil’s Beer Garden. Unfortunately, it closed permanently in 2018. However, gastronomy at this address continues: After several years of vacancy, a new owner took over the area, fundamentally renovated it, and the beer garden became Zollhaus Pankow. Zollhaus Pankow now offers Mediterranean dishes and a large beer garden with a play area for children. Also nearby is the Pratergarten on Kastanienallee, one of Berlin’s oldest beer gardens.
