Upon its opening, the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm was considered one of Berlin's most magnificent theater buildings.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the theater was directed by the legendary director Max Reinhardt.
The defining sensational theater success in Berlin in the 1920s was Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera. In 1949, Bert Brecht and Helene Weigel founded the Berliner Ensemble, which found its home at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in the early 1950s. The goal of Brecht’s theater theory “Epic Theater” at the time was to encourage the audience to think for themselves, which is why they should identify as little as possible with the events on stage.
Today, the Berliner Ensemble still performs contemporary, political theater with a message.
