Located on Schiffbauerdamm in Mitte, the Berliner Ensemble stands for political contemporary theater with a rich Brecht history: a neo-baroque building, an international ensemble, up to 15 productions per month, and an occupancy rate that makes Berlin's theater scene look pale in comparison.
Record Occupancy and International Program
In the 2024/25 season, the Berliner Ensemble recorded a record in the 130-year history of the theater on Schiffbauerdamm, with 226,787 visitors and an occupancy rate of 95.2 percent. This sets clear standards in the Berlin theater landscape. The Berliner Ensemble is also in demand internationally: A total of 18 guest performances took the ensemble to China, England, Taiwan, and the USA.
In the 2025/26 season, the Berliner Ensemble will present ten premieres by international directors, including Mateja Koležnik, Barrie Kosky, Antú Romero Nunes, and Laura Linnenbaum. In addition, three new ensemble members moved from the Thalia Theater in Hamburg to the Berliner Ensemble: Marina Galic, Jens Harzer, and Sebastian Zimmler.
Three Stages, One Berliner Ensemble
Since September 2019, two new venues have complemented the BE quarter: the New House with 170 seats and the Werkraum (Workshop) with 60 seats, which hosts the international junior program WORX for young directors. Thus, the house offers the right setting for every theater need. Thanks to private funding, the WORX junior program can continue despite cultural cuts, offering young theater makers space for work, protection, and freedom.
Those looking for more than just a performance will also find it: With the campaign “Theater for all”, the Berliner Ensemble aims to show that theater can open up many perspectives and is as diverse as its audience.
