The Hofkino at FMP1 is Friedrichshain's most charming open-air cinema in Berlin: a quiet courtyard in the middle of the neighborhood, deck chairs, headphones, and a program you won't find in any multiplex.
Arthouse Cinema Under the Open Sky: What Hofkino at FMP1 Offers
The open-air cinema at FMP1 is located in the courtyard of the FMP1 office building in Friedrichshain. Out of consideration for the neighborhood, it is a silent cinema where sound is transmitted via headphones. This makes the evening surprisingly concentrated. Visitors can fully enjoy the film experience on deck chairs. Warm blankets and rain ponchos are available for free rental. This is especially valuable on cooler summer nights, which we greatly appreciated during our visit.
Tickets cost 7 Euros and can be purchased online or on-site; reduced tickets are available for 5 Euros, but only on-site. For drinks and small snacks, there is a selection available. The program is anything but mainstream. In cooperation with b-ware! Ladenkino and other partners, there is a curated arthouse cinema program in the beautiful courtyard. Primarily shown are socially relevant documentaries and sophisticated international productions in OmeU and OmdU format, meaning original language with German or English subtitles. The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation participates with a diverse offering of political documentaries and engaging discussion partners. Many evenings therefore conclude with a film discussion, which gives the cinema evening its own intellectual touch. Children’s films are not the focus here: Hofkino clearly targets an adult, film-loving audience.
Location and Surroundings: A Walk Before the Film
Franz-Mehring-Platz is an inviting city square located between Ostbahnhof and Karl-Marx-Allee. Those who set off early enough can stroll along Karl-Marx-Allee before the film. The former showpiece street of the GDR still impresses today with a sight that could also fit in Moscow or Warsaw. For dinner nearby, Restaurant Jäger & Lustig is recommended, located near Warschauer Straße and established by its founders as one of the best restaurants in Friedrichshain. Those who prefer wine will find Briefmarken Weine on Karl-Marx-Allee to be an excellent choice, a true paradise for lovers of Italian wine.
