Mama Vegan on Tempelhofer Damm cooks traditional Vietnamese and purely plant-based dishes, plus its own sushi menu. A red curry with tofu costs 11.50 Euros, the Mama Bowl 15.90 Euros, and at lunchtime, the same menu is noticeably cheaper. Tables can be reserved for up to twenty people; the restaurant makes its own spring rolls and kimchi.
Vietnamese Cuisine on Tempelhofer Damm
Tempelhofer Damm is a noisy main street, and at house number 122, Mama Vegan is one of the few purely plant-based restaurants in southern Berlin. That’s the main point: if you want to eat vegan in Tempelhof, you don’t have many options, and here the entire menu is plant-based instead of just a section of it. Traditional Vietnamese dishes are cooked, with tofu, seitan, and reconstructed alternatives for chicken and duck, plus curries in coconut milk, soups, and fried noodles. Unusual for a Vietnamese establishment is the second half of the menu, as the restaurant also offers its own sushi selection, describing it as extravagant. Accessibility is easy because the Alt-Tempelhof U-Bahn station on the U6 line is only about three hundred meters away, and several bus lines operate on the Damm. Parking here is much more relaxed than in the city center; you can usually find something in the side streets. The dining area is bright and simply designed; it’s about the food, not the staging.
A Menu from Miso Soup to Fried Rice Noodle Dishes
The menu at Mama Vegan is numbered and starts with appetizers including miso soup, summer rolls with tofu, and homemade kimchi. According to their own statement, both the spring rolls with taro, morels, and glass noodles, as well as the kimchi made from Napa cabbage, chili, and garlic, are homemade. For main courses, the menu works on a modular principle: you first choose the sauce, such as red curry, mango, or peanut in coconut milk, and then decide whether to add tofu, seitan, or an alternative for chicken or duck. On the regular menu, red curry with tofu starts at 11.50 Euros, with seitan at 12.50 Euros; at lunchtime, the same dish is significantly cheaper. Fried rice noodles and Udon noodles form the second major block, along with salads with mango and Asian herbs. The restaurant is well-suited for groups, as reservations for up to twenty people are accepted. Online ordering is also available, with pick-up or delivery from the same kitchen. If you’re eating here for the first time, one of the curries is the safest bet, as it’s the best way to try out the modular principle.
