On Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin-Mitte, directly on the Spree and within sight of the Berliner Ensemble: Brechts Steakhaus combines the literary heritage of Bertolt Brecht with upscale steak enjoyment by the water. One of the city's most elegant restaurants on the Spree riverbank.

Brechts Steakhaus: History Meets Meat Culture

Bertolt Brecht’s former regular haunt, within sight of the Berliner Ensemble on Schiffbauerdamm, now bears the name of the great dramatist and has long since established itself as a firm address for meat lovers in Berlin-Mitte. The historic building was reopened as a modern steak restaurant in late summer 2016 after extensive renovation. What remains is the exceptional location: directly on the famous Schiffbauerdamm, right on the Spree riverbank. Anyone looking for an elegant restaurant by the water in Berlin will find what they’re looking for here.

The Schlemmeratlas selected this riverside restaurant as one of Germany’s 50 best steakhouses. This is no coincidence. Hand-picked farmers, proven quality, and the strictest guidelines determine the standards by which cattle breeds are raised in Australia, Nebraska, or Ireland. The restaurant also operates its own butchery kitchen, where whole cattle are expertly butchered according to in-house standards. Selected cuts then mature in the restaurant’s own dry ager for an even more intense flavor.

Terrace, Spree View and More

The spacious Spree terrace is one of the city’s largest, offering a wide view of the flowing water. Inside, guests can expect a stylish brasserie design with plenty of wood and elegant understatement. The menu also impresses with its breadth: in addition to prime cuts, dry-aged steaks, tartare, roast beef, fillets, and burgers, there is also a spicy halloumi burger for vegetarians, as well as butterfish and salmon steak for fish lovers. On Sundays, Brechts Steakhaus also invites guests to a 3-course steak tasting from 13:00 to 15:00. Either way: as an elegant restaurant by the water with culinary substance, this establishment in Mitte makes an exceptionally good impression.
