The Grand in Berlin-Mitte was long one of the most remarkable addresses for steak in Berlin: a listed building from 1842, a monumental chandelier, and cuts from all over the world on the plate. Since July 2024, the restaurant has ceased operations.
The Grand Restaurant ceased its restaurant operations in July 2024 and now functions solely as an event location.
What was served: Steaks from all over the world, prepared at 800 degrees
Those looking for a top-level steak in Berlin could hardly bypass The Grand. The meat selection included Charolais, Irish Hereford, Pomeranian Beef, US Premium Beef, as well as Luma, Grand Coast, and the legendary Kobe Beef. In addition, and what we found particularly exciting, there were selected cuts of Ruppiner Wagyu beef and Kagoshima beef. The special thing was not only the origin of the meat but also its preparation. A South Bend Grill was used, reaching a temperature of up to 800 degrees, giving the meat special roasted aromas. The fine cuts were served as fillet, entrecôte, porterhouse, or chateaubriand.
Side dishes included mushrooms in cream, port wine jus, and potato gratin, in addition to the classic duo of steak and fries. Although the establishment was clearly meat-focused, there were certainly options for vegetarians. Numerous meat-free alternatives were offered with each course. The Grand was also popular with celebrities such as Barbara Becker, Herbert Grönemeyer, and Mariella Ahrens.
A house with history, near Alexanderplatz
The Grand was located in a listed building from 1842 at Hirtenstraße 4 in Berlin-Mitte, a former communal poor school. Owner Jesko Klatt picked up on the idea of an aging grand hotel: morbid, full of secrets and fantasies, with peeling plaster, old furniture, and classic marble floors. Since 2012, the approximately 1,000 m² building has been one of Berlin’s trendiest locations. Alexanderplatz and the Volksbühne are in the immediate vicinity. Since July 2024, The Grand has ceased its restaurant and bar operations but remains available for events, photoshoots, and other event concepts.
