Blue Nile

Blue Nile on Tempelhofer Ufer in Kreuzberg is Berlin's oldest Ethiopian restaurant, known since 1989 for spicy stews, tender Injera, and one of the city's most beautiful coffee ceremonies. Here, you don't just dine; you sit together, share, and engage in conversation.
Ethiopian Cuisine in Berlin: What’s on the Table at Blue Nile
The centerpiece of the menu is Injera, the soft, slightly sour flatbread made from teff flour, served with spicy meat dishes like Doro Wot, a chicken stew with Berbere spice, or Siga Wot, a rich beef stew. Those who forgo meat also have delicious options like Shiro Wot or Misir Wot served on Mesobs. Because that’s precisely what’s special here: the dishes are served on colorful, woven basket tables, around which people sit and eat together. Additionally, various soups and salads are available to start, including the homemade Blue Nile salad with artichokes, olives, and sheep’s cheese. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 20:00 to 22:00, the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony also takes place, where guests can watch the coffee being roasted.
Since 1989: One of the Oldest Meeting Points in Kreuzberg’s Gastro Scene
As Berlin’s first Ethiopian restaurant, Blue Nile has stood for genuine tradition and authentic dishes since 1989. This makes it significantly older than most African restaurants in Berlin that have emerged in recent years. Its location on Tempelhofer Ufer in Kreuzberg is no coincidence. Especially in districts like Kreuzberg, you can find authentic African restaurants that bring traditional recipes fresh to the table. If you want to continue exploring after your meal, you’re in the right area: Mehringdamm is just a few steps away, home to classics like the cult snack bar Curry 36 and popular spots like Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebap. However, the Blue Nile has its very own rhythm in this neighborhood, and has for over three decades.
