Located in a historic half-timbered house directly on the Landwehr Canal in Kreuzberg, Rutz Zollhaus serves new German cuisine at a Michelin-star level: down-to-earth Berlin classics, consistently regionally sourced and meticulously reinterpreted.
New German Cuisine Between Tiled Stove and Canal View
The building itself is a story in itself: originally planned as a depot for city sanitation, later a control point for steam navigation, the house today combines English country house architecture with German half-timbered style. Today it is a modern guesthouse in a listed historic building. Rutz Zollhaus is located directly on the picturesque Landwehr Canal in the heart of Kreuzberg, where guests can enjoy the outdoor terrace in summer, while in winter they are welcomed into cozy rooms with rustic tiled stoves.
Behind it lies Michelin pedigree: The parent restaurant, Restaurant Rutz, was once again awarded three Michelin stars in 2025, making it the only restaurant in Berlin with this distinction. Florian Mennicken, who previously worked at Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer and Facil, now heads the kitchen at Zollhaus. Thus, genuine three-star DNA flows directly into the new German cuisine by the canal.
Rutz Zollhaus: Berlin Classics, Reimagined for Modern Times
Head Chef Florian Mennicken and Culinary Director Marco Müller cook here with fundamental honesty and authenticity. Regional products, German specialties, and traditional recipes are given a new, modern touch and are innovatively adapted to contemporary tastes without becoming arbitrary. For starters, for example, char from the breeder with radish salad, smoked remoulade, and nasturtium vinaigrette, or Königsberger Klopse with mashed potatoes, char caviar, chive oil, and fried capers in two portion sizes.
In addition, there is a remarkable wine list: With over 400 wines, including classic varieties and Grand Crus, Rutz Zollhaus embodies the legendary spirit of the Rutz Wine Bar. The surprise menu is available from 35 Euros per person with five small dishes, or in the larger version for 75 Euros with appetizers, main course, and dessert. Anyone looking for new German cuisine in Berlin that doesn’t have to choose between history and present, but naturally combines both, is in the right place here.
