In Berlin-Mitte, on the lively Torstraße, the family business Friedel Richter has been showcasing since 2014 what New German Cuisine truly means: regional, seasonal, and with a genuine signature. Everything is homemade, with ingredients sourced from Berlin gardens and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Friedel Richter: New German Cuisine with Berlin Attitude

Those walking past Torstraße 199 in Mitte might easily overlook the restaurant. Yet, a closer look is well worth it. Unpretentious, seasonal, and passionately detailed, Friedel Richter presents itself on Torstraße in Berlin-Mitte. Despite the abundance of good restaurants in the area, this small establishment asserts itself with regional, fresh, and handmade cuisine, along with the charm of a family business. This pays off. From bread and chips to spice blends and stocks, everything here is homemade. Ingredients are exclusively organic, sourced from various gardens in and around Berlin, as well as organic meat production in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

What’s served changes daily. The menu is a large, old split-flap display on the wall, featuring modern German dishes dedicated to fresh regional products. Specifically, this means: cold cucumber soup with homemade pickles, grilled beef tartare, homemade salmon, brioche burgers, beef roulades with celeriac puree, and Labskaus with pickled herring are on the menu, creatively arranged.

Homemade, Organic, Yet Down-to-Earth

The space itself lives up to the kitchen’s promise. The restaurant is bright and friendly, puristically furnished with a large window front, stone floor, green upholstered chairs, a wooden counter, and an open kitchen. In summer, outdoor seating is also available. Those looking for wine recommendations will find a concise but well-curated wine list. Craft beer is also available on the drink menu.

Particularly noteworthy is the consistency with which Friedel Richter implements its approach. Cooking is done with fresh ingredients and herbs, some of which the restaurant grows itself. In addition to EC and credit cards, the establishment also accepts Bitcoins, showing that while they cook traditionally, they also keep up with the times. For anyone looking for New German Cuisine in Berlin without ending up in glossy restaurants, Friedel Richter is a reliable address.
