At Oranienburger Straße 38 in Mitte, acht&dreissig proves that German cuisine can do much more than just home cooking. Here, seasonal classics meet contemporary interpretation, served by a team with true top gastronomy DNA and a host with Vietnamese roots who redefines German cuisine.
New German Cuisine Among Tourist Traps
Oranienburger Straße is not exactly considered an insider tip for good food in Berlin. It is all the more surprising that acht&dreissig asserts itself precisely here as one of the most convincing addresses for new German cuisine. Behind the concept is host Duc Anh Tran, who, although raised in Vietnam, gives German classics such as braised ox cheek, Königsberger Klopse, and mustard eggs a truly contemporary form. Together with head chef Stefan Schaarschmidt, who comes from the top gastronomy of the Grand Hyatt Berlin, the menu changes seasonally every two months. Nevertheless, some signature dishes remain, including the tartar and the Wiener Schnitzel. The ingredients are sourced, wherever possible, from regional suppliers. Freshness and seasonality are clearly paramount.
acht&dreissig: Honest Cuisine, Fair Price, Clear Concept
The restaurant’s interior focuses on charming industrial chic: open kitchen, long wooden counter, a simple yet inviting spatial feel. The wine selection is consistently limited to German winemakers, for example from Rheinhessen, Palatinate, or Baden. For lunch, prices range between seven and twelve euros, and in the evening between five and 26 euros, which is extremely fair for the quality on the plate. The service feels less like a restaurant team and more like a group of good acquaintances. So, if you want to eat well without encountering exaggerated frills or bloated concepts, acht&dreissig is the right place for you.
