In the listed courtyard of a former women's prison in Charlottenburg, Lovis serves new German cuisine at Michelin level. Head chef Sophia Rudolph consistently relies on seasonal, regional products and places vegetables at the center of her menu.

Lovis: New German Cuisine in the Former Prison Courtyard

Behind an inconspicuous door on the bustling Kantstraße in Charlottenburg, a green 19th-century courtyard opens up, leading into a light-flooded dining room. The architectural feat is completely successful: high ceilings, exposed brickwork, a well-thought-out lighting concept, and sleek interior design create an atmosphere unlike any other in Berlin. In the former castle courtyard, now covered and fitted with large windows, one sits particularly originally in the so-called “Aquarium” room. Lovis is thus much more than a restaurant. It is a place that makes history tangible without appearing like a museum.

Sophia Rudolph and her Contemporary German Cuisine

Head chef Sophia Rudolph spent her formative years in Lyon and then worked with legend Alain Ducasse, which is why her cuisine is deeply rooted in classic French technique. Nevertheless, she calls her style “Contemporary German Cuisine”: many products from Germany, interpreted in a modern way. She focuses on seasonal and regional ingredients from certified sustainable sources and develops dishes where vegetables are clearly central. A four- and a six-course menu are available, each also in a vegetarian or vegan version. The products largely come from sustainable producers in the Brandenburg region. Additionally, there are à la carte dishes. Those who want to start the evening relaxed should first enjoy an aperitif at the Lovis Bar with a terrace. The Michelin Guide has already included Lovis in its selection, confirming what regulars have long known: New German cuisine is served here at a level unparalleled in Berlin.
