Located at Savignyplatz in Charlottenburg, Cassambalis has been a stalwart among Berlin's Greek restaurants for decades. Greek-Mediterranean cuisine, walls densely hung with art, and a unique regular-guest atmosphere. No wonder even Angela Merkel found her favorite Greek spot here.

Cassambalis: Berlin’s Most Famous Greek Restaurant

Cassambalis is located on Grolmanstraße, in the immediate vicinity of Savignyplatz and Kurfürstendamm in Charlottenburg. Upon entering the restaurant, one immediately notices: personality is evident in every detail here. Berlin’s most famous Greek spot looks like an art gallery, with pictures hung so closely together. In addition, there are checkered tablecloths, wine racks, and an antipasti buffet that greets guests right at the entrance. Owner Costa Cassambalis welcomes a diverse crowd of families, business people, politicians, and regular guests from the neighborhood. The atmosphere is warm, the bistro feeling authentic.

Culinary-wise, the restaurant moves between Greek roots and Mediterranean breadth. Particularly strong are the appetizers called Mezedes, which have been freshly prepared daily for years by a Greek chef: firm anchovy fillets with capers, spicy octopus salad, grilled peppers, and herb-coated cheese balls. In 2018, Cassambalis was also mentioned in the Michelin Guide.

Greek Cuisine with Distinctive Character

The menu features a lot of fish, meat, and seafood. Main courses range between 26 and 49 Euros. Those who prefer to explore the menu in several small courses can choose a selection of Mezedes and accompany them with one of the carefully curated wines. Mediterranean cuisine is served, impressing with good preparation and fresh products. Additionally, the service knows what guests value: pleasant ambiance, friendly service, and excellent food. Cassambalis gained fame as Chancellor Angela Merkel’s favorite restaurant and still attracts an audience today that seeks more than just an ordinary dinner. It is open Monday to Saturday from 12 PM, Sundays from 2 PM, each until 2 AM.
