Bonanza Coffee Roasters: Where Berlin’s Specialty Coffee Movement Began

Bonanza Coffee Roasters is one of the true pioneers of European specialty coffee. Founded in 2006 by Kiduk Reus and Yumi Choi, the café was among the very first to bring carefully selected and transparently roasted specialty coffee to Berlin, long before the third wave of coffee reached the mainstream. While Europe was still roasting dark, Bonanza focused on light roasts, thereby shifting the taste of an entire continent. Today, the result is measurable: in 2025, Bonanza was named Europe’s best independent café at the European Coffee & Hospitality Awards.

Bonanza also built direct relationships with coffee producers, which has since become an industry standard. The philosophy of being “unnecessarily good” is evident in every cup: clear, expressive roast profiles that emphasize sweetness and clarity. Coffee lovers will find no compromises here.

Backyard Roastery, Filter Coffee, and the Best of Kreuzberg

The roastery on Adalbertstraße is located in a Kreuzberg backyard. The space is larger and quieter than the address initially suggests: white walls, high arched windows, outdoor tables, and a glass-oak partition through which the roasting area is visible from the bar. Each location offers two espresso options: a blend for milk drinks and a rotating single-origin variety for espresso enthusiasts, as well as several single-origin selections for batch brew.

The shelves are always stocked with rare coffee beans from Ethiopia, Colombia, and other origin countries, transparent in their origin and taste. In addition to the main location in Kreuzberg, there are other locations in Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte, all following a minimalist aesthetic approach and focusing on the pure coffee experience.
