Behind a graffiti-covered facade in Charlottenburg lies one of Berlin's best Asian restaurants: 893 Ryōtei on Kantstraße combines Michelin-level Japanese cuisine with the charm of an Izakaya, turning sushi, sashimi, and creative fusion dishes into a true evening experience.
893 Ryōtei: Japanese Cuisine with Character
Anyone walking along Kantstraße in Charlottenburg will likely pass this restaurant by. The mirrored, graffiti-covered facade completely contrasts with the trendy black interior inside. Yet, it’s worth taking a look behind it. 893 Ryōtei holds a Michelin Plate 2025 and a Google rating of 4.6 from over 2,000 reviews. This is no coincidence, but the result of consistent quality. Behind it is The Duc Ngo, who serves a wide range of Japanese cuisine, enriched with Asian, South American, and European influences, as well as a wealth of spices.
The restaurant is thus one of the strongest addresses in Berlin’s ranking of Asian restaurants. It is considered one of the trendiest spots on Kantstraße, known as Berlin’s number-one food street. If you manage to grab a seat at the counter, don’t underestimate it: the open kitchen allows guests to watch the chefs directly prepare sushi and sashimi.
Sashimi Taquitos, Miso Cod and Izakaya Style
The menu at 893 Ryōtei confidently navigates between tradition and experimentation. Alongside classic dishes such as sushi, sashimi, tempura, and tataki, creative options like “Sashimi Taquitos”, “Tai Yuzu Truffle”, and “Unagi Royal” can be found. Also particularly noteworthy are the Fire Prawn Tempura with light batter and juicy prawns, and the Miso Cod, tender cod in a miso marinade with a simply convincing texture.
The concept consistently follows the sharing idea. The kitchen operates in a register closer to communal Izakaya dining than formal Kaiseki ceremony. Thus, the Japanese restaurant experience unfolds together at the table, dish by dish. The cocktails at 893 Ryōtei also stand out and harmoniously complement the culinary experience. Those who wish to reserve should do so in advance. And if you get a seat at the bar, you should take it.
