Companion Tea & Coffee: Direct Trade and Tasting Room in Neukölln
Shawn Barber from Canada and Chris Onton from Australia initially started as a café in the Concept Store Voo in Kreuzberg in 2013. After about five years, it became too small there, and since 2018, Companion has been located in a former bookstore on Weserstraße. The ambition has remained: single-origin teas beyond mass production, from direct trade and with traceable origin.
Barber travels to the tea gardens himself, including Nepal, Japan, and Taiwan, and builds direct relationships with small farmers. The focus is on pesticide-free teas that can be traced back to the producer. Onton curates the coffee list with international roasters, so in addition to the tea menu, espresso, batch brew, and pour-over are also on the menu.
Terrazzo, Tea Taps, and No Laptops
The space is an argument in itself: a white terrazzo bar, tea-stained wooden seating, exposed brick, and floor-to-ceiling windows, with outdoor seating in summer. Technically unusual are their own tea brewing taps with three temperature levels. In the back, there is a black marble table specifically built for tastings and events.
A house rule shapes the atmosphere: laptops are not welcome, even though Wi-Fi is available. The room is intended for conversation, not for home office work. In addition to tea and coffee, there is chai latte with fresh cardamom, matcha, cold-pressed juices, natural wines, and pastries, some homemade. Everything can also be taken away, from Hojicha to tea strainers.
