I spend a dangerous amount of time in toy shops, usually without a child in tow. At Werken Spielen Schenken in Steglitz I rediscovered the joy of model building, and at siebenschon I picked up the wooden toy I would have wished for myself. I collect these addresses for everyone who wants to give children something that lasts longer than a week.
v. Kloeden on Wielandstraße near Olivaer Platz has been a family business since 1967, combining a bookstore, toy shop, and its own publishing house under one roof. Children's books are also available in English, French, and Spanish, along with wooden toys, dolls, building blocks, and handicrafts from the Erzgebirge. Extensive advice is provided here.
Sönneken is located at Lausitzer Platz in Kreuzberg, on a traffic-calmed street around a large playground and just around the corner from Markthalle Neun. Kirsten Opdenplatz has been running the little shop since 2006, selecting wooden toys, games, and books based on durability, pollutant-free production, and short supply chains.
Frieda Hain on Gärtnerstraße at Boxhagener Platz combines a fabric store and a children's store under one roof. Myriam Kliewer has been running the shop since 2009 and sews school cones, sleeping sheep, name pillows and grow-with-me trousers from fabrics the customers pick themselves. Toys and GOTS-certified clothing round it off.
Werken Spielen Schenken is located directly at the Schloßstraße subway station in Steglitz and fills over 2,500 square meters with around 200,000 articles. The toy department alone measures 1,300 square meters, the craft area over 1,200 on two floors. For children's birthdays, the store sets aside the child's desired items in a dedicated gift box.
Modellbahnen am Mierendorffplatz is located directly at the rear exit of the subway station in Charlottenburg and offers over 100,000 items from Z gauge to LGB on 200 square meters. A large demonstration layout with Faller Car System is available in the shop. A Märklin 'my world' starter set for children aged three and up costs 79.99 Euros.
spielbrett on Körtestraße at Südstern offers one of Berlin's largest selections of board games, from children's games to card games and strategy titles for adults. Andreas Kaluza and Christian Seipelt run the shop as a general partnership and keep a second address in Wilmersdorf on Berliner Straße, close to the U-Bahn.
siebenschön is located on Gärtnerstraße in Friedrichshain, a few steps from Boxhagener Platz and directly at the Wühlischstraße tram stop. Jana Gunia sells wooden and natural toys from Grimm's, Ostheimer, Kapla, and Bajo, as well as card games from Djeco. A Djeco card game costs 9.99 Euros, Sophie la girafe 22.99 Euros.
In 2025 The LEGO Store Berlin moved from number 20 to number 8 on Tauentzienstraße, a few steps from Wittenbergplatz. Inside stand the Pick-A-Brick wall with loose individual pieces and the tower where everyone builds their own minifigure from torsos, legs, heads, hair and accessories. Build events run here every month.
The Steiff Shop Berlin is located at Kurfürstendamm 40/41 with its entrance on Knesebeckstraße, recognizable by the large brown bear figure in front of the door. It is the only Steiff store in the city. The 28-centimeter Berlin Teddy Bear, priced at 55 Euros, is available exclusively here in Berlin and in the manufacturer's online shop.
Wilde Schwäne on Breite Straße in Pankow has been selling high-quality wooden and metal toys off the mainstream since 1999. Around 55 manufacturers fill the shelves, from Haba and Brio to Ostheimer, Käthe Kruse and Cuboro. A section of its own is devoted to juggling, with clubs, diabolos, devil sticks, poi and ribbons.
