The building on Nollendorfplatz opened in 1906 as the Neues Schauspielhaus, is a listed building in Berlin, and features a 14-meter-high main hall with Murano glass chandeliers. METROPOL: Celebrate your Birthday in the 1906 Theater Building
The building on Nollendorfplatz was completed in 1906 as the Neues Schauspielhaus, designed by Albert Fröhlich and the office of Boswau and Knauer, which also built the KaDeWe. Above the street façade are a gable and robust side towers, along with reliefs by Nikolaus Friedrich featuring larger-than-life dancing figures. The building is a listed monument in the Berlin list of architectural heritage.
The history behind it is accordingly rich. In 1927, Erwin Piscator opened his Theater am Nollendorfplatz here, with stage designs by John Heartfield, program booklets by George Grosz, and Bertolt Brecht in dramaturgy. From 1951, the hall operated as the Metropol cinema, from 1977 as a discotheque, and in the eighties, it was famous for its laser show. Since autumn 2019, it has been called METROPOL again and is used as an event location, concert hall, and party venue.
Halls, Galleries, and Private Rooms
In total, approximately 1,000 square meters are available for up to 1,300 guests. The main hall measures 300 square meters, is 14 meters high, and accommodates up to 850 people, 300 for banquets, and 210 for galas. Additionally, there is the foyer with 190 square meters and a circular bar, as well as two galleries of 150 and 180 square meters, which have their own bars and lounge areas.
For smaller birthday groups, the three private rooms (Séparées) are interesting: 56 square meters next to the main hall with a sliding door and kitchen access, 60 square meters on the first gallery with its own staircase from the street, and 70 square meters in the former Emperor’s Box, with an ornate stucco coffered ceiling at nine meters high and an eight-meter-high glass front facing Nollendorfplatz. Lighting, sound, laser, projection, bars, and kitchen are in-house; outside food and drinks are not allowed. The Nollendorfplatz subway station is directly in front of the door, and parking is scarce.
