Bar in the Water Tower: Celebrate Birthdays above Obersee

The water tower on the Lindwerderberg has stood above the Obersee in Alt-Hohenschönhausen since 1900, at 61 meters above sea level, making it the highest natural elevation in the district. It was built according to the system of engineer Otto Intze, initially for the pressure of the neighboring brewery, later for the villa colony. It was decommissioned in 1922, used as an anti-aircraft position during World War II, and as a radio station during GDR times. In 2004, new owners renovated the 23-meter-high brick tower, and it has been a listed building ever since.

The bar is now located in the lower part: a semi-circular counter, white leather seats, and a gallery above. The small terrace in front offers a view of the Obersee, with the Mies van der Rohe House opposite. The team came up with a special detail: a red band lights up on the tower roof when a private party is celebrating, and green when the bar is open to everyone.

What to Consider When Booking

The bar offers seating for 40 people, the terrace accommodates 50 to 60 guests, and the interior is designed for approximately 50 people. Rentals are in eight-hour blocks; the venue generally does not agree to open-ended events. During the warmer half of the year, the room and terrace can only be booked together; during the colder half, the interior can also be rented alone. In addition to the rental fee, there is a minimum beverage turnover, the amount of which is individually agreed upon.

A sound system is included in the rental, a projector is available for an extra charge, and the tower is accessible for people with disabilities. For food, the bar works with two permanent partners, a delicatessen and a barbecue provider. The drink menu focuses on cocktails and classics, with bottled wines starting at 22 Euros. If you come by car, it’s best to plan time for parking; a taxi stand is in the immediate vicinity, and tram M5 stops at Freienwalder Straße.
