At Heinrichplatz stands the city's most famous punk address, named after the old postal district Suedost 36. The venue is run by an association, and the programme ranges from hard concerts to the queer series Gayhane and the Roller Disco. The club explicitly takes action against sexist, racist and homophobic behaviour.
Punk Institution at Heinrichplatz in Kreuzberg
Oranienstraße is the main artery of old Kreuzberg 36, and at Heinrichplatz, approximately halfway between Kottbusser Tor and Görlitzer Bahnhof, lies SO36. The name originates from the historical postal district Südost 36, which gave the entire neighborhood its nickname. The venue is not operated by a company, but by the association Sub Opus 36, which primarily sees itself as a promoter of culture. This is evident in the program: there is intentionally space for newcomers and for projects that would not get a stage elsewhere. The club also has clear house rules and, according to its own statement, takes action against sexist, racist, and homophobic expressions and actions, if necessary with a ban from the premises or the cancellation of an event. SO36 can be reached via the Görlitzer Bahnhof and Kottbusser Tor subway stations. Both are a few minutes away, and the path leads along Oranienstraße, right through the neighborhood that gave the venue its name.
Hard Sounds, Gayhane, and Roller Disco Under One Roof
Musically, the venue has its roots in punk, and hard sounds beyond the chart mainstream remain its core to this day. However, it now also features HipHop, Crossover, and Techno, so the range is significantly broader than its reputation suggests. The concert operations are complemented by a network of established series that have made the venue famous far beyond the music scene. Gayhane is a queer party series with its own audience, Roller Disco brings roller skates to the large dance floor, and there’s a special version for younger guests. Additionally, there’s a Poetry Slam, Kiezbingo, a flea market, Salon36, and the in-house festival Grossstadtwahnsinn. Disco balls hang over the spacious parquet floor, which might not immediately fit a punk club, and that’s precisely why it’s typical for SO36. The program is filled well into the coming year, with some dates already set for the year after next. The venue does not state general admission prices; they are listed with each individual concert. Anyone who has been there understands why SO36 is never missing from any list of Berlin clubs.
