Berlin Icebar: Location and Directions at Alexanderplatz

The Berlin Icebar is located at Spandauer Straße 2, just a few minutes’ walk from Alexanderplatz, making it central between the TV Tower and the Nikolaiviertel. Those arriving by tram alight at the Spandauer Straße/Marienkirche stop and are at the entrance in less than two minutes; lines M4, M5, and M6 as well as bus lines 100 and 200 stop there. By subway, the route is via the Rotes Rathaus station on line U5, from there it is about 550 meters. There are no private parking spaces, and parking spots around Alexanderplatz are scarce, so arriving by bus and train is the simpler solution. The venue is fully wheelchair accessible, including the restrooms, and bears the “Reisen für Alle” (Travel for All) seal. There are no lockers, but a normal-sized bag or backpack may be brought inside.

Minus Ten Degrees Celsius, Ice Sculptures, and Three Drinks at the Berlin Icebar

The visit does not begin in the ice, but in a heated tavern where ponchos and gloves are issued. Both are included in the ticket, as are three drinks, which are redeemed via a so-called Seaman Book: one in the warm bar, two in the ice room. The standard ticket costs 23.00 Euros, children up to five years old can accompany for free. Beyond that begins the actual room, for which over 40,000 kilograms of natural ice were used. At minus ten degrees Celsius, the bar, seating, sculptures, and drinking glasses are made of ice. Because the cold is distinctly noticeable, guests usually stay in the ice room for about twenty minutes and then return to the warm bar, where they can stay as long as they wish. The story told is that of the German North Polar Expedition of 1869: The ship Hansa froze stuck in the ice and sank, the crew overwintered on a drifting floe and reached the Greenlandic coast in lifeboats after 36 days. Food is not available on site, additional drinks only in the tavern. Due to limited capacity, a reservation is recommended.
