On Charlottenburg's Kantstraße, arguably Berlin's most famous food mile, this South Indian restaurant serves uncompromising street food cuisine: authentic, colorful, and far beyond the usual butter chicken routine found in this country.
Mr Chai-Wala: South Indian Street Food That Hits Berlin’s Palate
On Kantstraße in Charlottenburg, Mr Chai-Wala brings a South Indian-focused concept to Berlin’s restaurant scene. This Indian restaurant is not a place for toned-down flavors. The establishment aims to serve authentic South Indian dishes, with spiciness adjusted only as needed. More spice is available upon request. Operator Vinotharan Inparajah, who also runs the Nu restaurant on Schlüterstraße, specifically brought a team of Indian chefs to Berlin who visibly live their passion for their home cuisine.
The star of the menu is the Tamil street food classic Kothu: a dish made from traditional Roti bread, vegetables, and optionally meat, prepared with flair and sound right before everyone’s eyes on a hot steel plate. Additionally, there are vegan variations of signature dishes including dosas, soups, South Indian Biryani specialties, curries, and small savory treats for sharing. It’s also worth checking out the crispy bread varieties, freshly baked in an original tandoor oven by a dedicated chef.
Pop Art, Spice Colors, and a Bar That Can Keep Up
The interior of this Indian restaurant in Berlin is not mere decoration, but a statement. Exceptional eye-catchers such as original parts of an Air India airplane and Pop Art images with Indian motifs characterize the design. The bright and colorful hues radiate through the large windows, sparking curiosity about the corner restaurant even from the street. Those who snag an outdoor seat also get one of the most beautiful spots on Kantstraße. Approximately 160 square meters, seating for 95 people indoors and 40 on the in-house terrace offer ample space.
The bar also deserves attention. The excellently stocked bar, stylishly presented on vibrant blue shelves, tempts with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, including signature drinks like the Chai Wala Espresso Martini or the Chaichai Colada. To finish, the aromatic, melt-in-your-mouth South Indian desserts are highly recommended, perfectly rounding off a visit to Mr Chai-Wala.
