Château Royal on Neustädtische Kirchstraße connects two historic 1880 buildings, which David Chipperfield Architects converted into a hotel with 93 rooms and suites. Over a hundred artworks hang throughout the building, in every room, the bar, the restaurant, and the stairwells. The largest suite is located beneath the building's bronze dome.

Two 1880 Buildings Between the Government District and Museum Island

Château Royal is located on Neustädtische Kirchstraße in Mitte, precisely between the government district and Museum Island. It is 600 meters to the Brandenburg Gate, 900 meters to the Reichstag, 950 meters to Gendarmenmarkt, and 1,400 meters each to Museum Island and Potsdamer Platz. Friedrichstraße S-Bahn station, with lines S3, S5, S7, and S9 as well as RE7, is about a five-minute walk away. Due to its historic nature, the building does not have its own garage; parking is available in the neighboring garage on Dorotheenstraße. The hotel combines two buildings: On Mittelstraße, a two-story residential building belonging to the brandy distiller George Lemm stood in 1799. In 1874, banker Emanuel Lohnstein bought the property and had a four-story new building erected in 1880, where stockbroker and art collector Adolph Thiem operated a bank. The building survived World War II but lost its stucco. From 1965 to 1990, the East Berlin agency Berlin-Information was located here, after which the building stood empty for 24 years. From 1977 to 1989, the Ministry for State Security is said to have observed the opposite American embassy from this location.

93 Rooms, Over a Hundred Artworks, and a Suite Under the Bronze Dome

David Chipperfield Architects undertook the conversion into a hotel between 2019 and 2020, designing the connecting building between the two historic parts and the two-story rooftop extension. Château Royal opened in September 2022. The 93 rooms and suites range from the Small category at 20 square meters starting from 195 Euros, through a Maisonette and a Tower Suite, to the Suite Apartment at 94 square meters with two bedrooms and a price starting from 950 Euros; this largest unit is located beneath the building’s bronze dome. What distinguishes the hotel from all others is its art: Over a hundred works hang throughout the entire building, in every room and every suite, in the bar, restaurant, corridors, stairwells, and on the facade, by artists from Anne Imhof to Rosemarie Trockel and Thomas Demand to Alicja Kwade and Monica Bonvicini. Dining takes place in the hotel’s own restaurant, which offers modern Mediterranean cuisine, complemented by a bar with boutique spirits. For events, there is a winter garden spanning 55 square meters, a private dining room at 36 square meters, and a music room at 30 square meters; also available for semi-private use are the Fireplace Lounge, Wine Room, inner courtyard, and rooftop terrace.
