The crime bookstore totsicher is located on Margaretenstraße, just around the corner from Weitlingstraße and only a few steps from Lichtenberg train station. The Weitlingkiez is a densely built residential area with old buildings and small shops, where bookstores are a rarity. From the street, the path leads past the Postbank branch, and after about 40 meters, you are in front of the door.

The store has been at this location since September 2013, and the move has a history. Previously, the bookstore was in Prenzlauer Berg, but rent increases and major renovations had dispersed its regular customers, many of whom had moved to cheaper parts of the city themselves. Owner Grit Burkhardt, in a way, followed them to Lichtenberg. One advantage of this location is already apparent when arriving: there is no parking management here; parking in the vicinity is free of charge. You can reach Lichtenberg by S-Bahn via lines S5, S7, and S75, by U5 as well, and bus 240 stops directly on Margaretenstraße.

The focus is on crime literature, from classic mystery novels to contemporary thrillers. Since the move, the crime bookstore totsicher has deliberately expanded its range and now also stocks general fiction alongside authors of the genre. The store visibly maintains its recommendations: its own book archive documents the featured titles, including prices, making it possible to trace what has been read and discussed here over the years.

The readings, which take place regularly and fill a searchable reading archive, are formative for the establishment. Admission usually costs five euros, with the Christmas reading costing six euros. This Christmas reading is the store’s finest tradition: every year, Stephan Hähnel reads absurd, bizarre, and murderous stories for the Christmas season, adding some dark humor to the general contemplation. The featured titles usually cost between 13.90 and 26 euros, a price range that is the same everywhere due to fixed book prices.
