In a windowless Reichsbahn bunker on Reinhardtstrasse, the Boros Collection showcases contemporary art from 1990 onwards across approximately three thousand square meters. The building can only be entered with a guided tour in a small group, which lasts an hour and a half and is available in German or English. The ticket costs 20 Euros.
A Concrete Block in the Heart of Mitte
Just a few steps from Friedrichstrasse, on Reinhardtstrasse, stands a concrete block that you have to look at twice. The building is a former Reichsbahn bunker from World War II, windowless, gray, and anything but inviting from the outside. Today, it houses the Boros Collection, a private collection of contemporary art compiled by Karen and Christian Boros. Across approximately three thousand square meters, works by international artists from 1990 onwards are displayed, and because the presentation changes completely at longer intervals, a second visit many years later is also worthwhile. In the heart of Mitte, between the government district and Museum Island, it’s an address one would simply walk past without a hint. This is precisely part of its charm, as hardly anyone expects art to hang behind these walls. The bunker served very different purposes after the war before it was converted into an exhibition house, and it shows.
Only with a Guided Tour, but in a Small Group
The bunker can only be entered as part of a guided tour, and that’s precisely what makes it interesting for a first date. The groups are small, the tour lasts an hour and a half and takes place in German or English. You walk together through narrow corridors and tall chambers, have the works explained, and afterwards have a whole list of things to discuss. Those who prefer to remain silent can do so without an awkward pause, as the space and the guide’s voice will naturally carry the conversation. The ticket costs 20 Euros, reduced 12 Euros, and must be booked online in advance, as spontaneous entry is not permitted. For security reasons, bags, even small ones, must be left in lockers. The Boros Collection recommends visits from twelve years of age. Despite its construction, the building is barrier-free, as an elevator provides access to all floors. For step-free access, a mobile ramp is available upon request, and those who wish to sit during the tour will be provided with a folding stool.
