eFoil School Wannsee: Electrically over the Großer Wannsee

The eFoil School Wannsee is located in the Nixe Marina on Königstraße in Wannsee, one of the quieter corners of the Großer Wannsee, where there is enough space between jetties and berths for initial attempts. An eFoil is a surfboard with a hydrofoil and an electric motor: as soon as enough speed is gained, the board lifts out of the water and glides silently half a meter above the surface. You don’t need wind or waves for this, which is why the sport works at all on a Berlin lake. Training is exclusively on premium boards from Audi, which cost around 16,000 Euros each and feature jet propulsion instead of an open propeller, significantly reducing the risk of injury in the event of a fall. The beginner’s course lasts 120 minutes and costs 249 Euros; it can also be booked as a voucher. The minimum age is 16, and no one needs a driver’s license.

Course Procedure and Equipment at eFoil School Wannsee

First, there’s an introduction on land, then dry runs on the board, only then do you get onto the water. Wetsuit, life vest, and helmet are provided; you only need to bring swimwear and a towel. The radio system in the helmets is particularly practical: the instructor can communicate, correct, and reassure throughout the entire ride, instead of waving from the shore. The course is partly accompanied by an inflatable boat, so no one is left alone on the lake. Jan is the instructor on site, who also advises on board sizes, foils, and drives if someone is considering their own equipment. Most participants fly for the first time after about 30 minutes, some take longer, and the two-hour course duration is designed precisely for this. The Berlin team has been offering eFoil training since 2018 and operates two other locations in the city besides the eFoil School Wannsee, at Müggelsee and at Funkhaus an der Spree.
