A Swimming Lake from a Clay Pit

The Ziegeleisee in northern Reinickendorf is not a natural body of water, but the legacy of a brickworks: where people swim today, clay was once mined for brick production. Because the groundwater here is particularly good, the resulting pond was developed into a swimming lake. The lake is completely fenced and operated as an open-air swimming pool; a connecting pipe to Hermsdorfer See keeps the water level stable. The water quality is rated as excellent in the EU classification for the years 2021 to 2024. The shore features a sandy beach and sunbathing lawn, along with a diving tower, two water slides, and beach chairs that can be rented at the ticket office – unauthorized use incurs a 60 Euro fine. There is a playground for children, and a football and beach volleyball court for ball players. The lake is wheelchair accessible, and the diving tower and slides make it particularly appealing for families with older children. A sunbathing lawn with trees adjoins the sandy beach, providing ample space for blankets and chairs.

Leased Operation with Concerts and Berlin Pass

The lido is one of the eight leased Berlin establishments on this list, with maintenance being the responsibility of the lessee. It is managed by a Reinickendorf company; the restaurant and snack bar are run by an independent proprietor with an outdoor terrace; those who only wish to eat can enter without paying admission. The pricing structure for a privately managed swimming lake is unusually social: the Berlin Pass explicitly qualifies for a discount, as do children under 15, students under 21, university students and apprentices under 27, recipients of social benefits, pensioners, and severely disabled persons with an ID. Ten-visit passes cost 63 Euros, while family and group rates are significantly lower. Additionally, the lessee hosts live concerts on the premises, including evenings with Bernhard Brink, accompanied by a goose dinner. This makes the lido more of an excursion destination with a program than just a swimming spot. For school classes and daycare centers, a special group rate applies for ten or more registered persons, and the operator reserves the right to change discounts without prior notice.
