The capital's restaurant Gendarmerie at Gendarmenmarkt in Mitte is Berlin's culinary declaration of love to itself: modern Berlin cuisine with French brasserie influences, served in a historic bank building with the world's largest wooden relief on the wall.

Gendarmerie: New German Cuisine with a Berlin Soul

Anyone looking for new German cuisine in Berlin will sooner or later end up at Gendarmenmarkt. The Gendarmerie is located in a former bank building on Behrenstraße, directly next to Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin’s historic center. Upon entering, guests are greeted by the so-called “Gendarm”, a lead-encased wooden figure specially made for the restaurant. The restaurant also houses the world’s largest wooden relief called “Bacchanal”, created by artist Jean-Yves Klein. The interior is not just a backdrop, but an homage to Berlin with all its peculiarities and facets. This also includes large-format photographs of Berlin personalities like Hildegard Knef and Horst Buchholz.

Seasonal Cuisine, Regional Producers, Classic Berlin Dishes

Culinary-wise, the Gendarmerie relies on a concept that skillfully combines tradition and modernity. Head chef Muttalib Missmann and his team focus on local and seasonal ingredients throughout the year. They work almost exclusively with regional suppliers and producers. The menu features classic Berlin dishes in modern interpretations, such as Königsberger Klopse or Chicken Fricassee. In addition, the restaurant offers the monthly changing three-course dinner “Capital Menu”, which provides a concise cross-section of the establishment’s culinary concept. Those who stop by at lunchtime also benefit from a daily changing lunch menu from Monday to Friday, available from 14.50 Euros. In summer, another highlight is added: a sun terrace with a view of Gendarmenmarkt invites guests to linger.
