Wagashi ejima is Kreuzberg's quiet address for handcrafted Japanese sweets that transform every season into edible art. Those looking for matcha in Berlin will find the most authentic sweet accompaniment to their cup here: delicate, seasonal, and truly uncompromising.

Matcha Meets Nerikiri: The Offering at Wagashi ejima

Those who want to drink matcha in Berlin usually think of latte variations and iced drinks. At Wagashi ejima, it’s different. Here, matcha is presented entirely in the Japanese tradition: as an accompaniment to freshly handmade wagashi. Especially the nerikiri, a wagashi variant in motifs like flowers or hand fans, is the heart of the offering. These creations are not only delicious but also visually remarkable. The sweets in the Kreuzberg shop change every month because in Japan there are unique shapes and flavors for each season. Thus, in spring, you’ll find delicate cherry blossom nerikiri, and in autumn, artistic maple leaf motifs. In addition, there are nerikiri wagashi made from anko sweet bean paste, the traditional Japanese tea confection. During your visit, we recommend ordering matcha together with a seasonal wagashi. If you want to experience matcha in its purest form, you’re better off here than in any trendy latte café.

A Small Shop with History and Good Neighbors

Wagashi ejima is open Saturdays to Mondays from 12 PM to 5 PM. In recent years, the shop has made a name for itself far beyond Kreuzberg. Wagashi ejima sells traditional Japanese sweets, which have also been featured in collaborations with the MUJI Ku’damm Flagship Store. This shows that the quality is convincing, even outside its own neighborhood. If you want to stroll further after your visit and try more matchas, Kreuzberg offers plenty of choices: Matchasome opened a second location at Maybachufer 21 in April 2025, just a few minutes away. Mamecha in Berlin-Mitte is also a well-known address for anyone who wants to enjoy matcha in Berlin.
