A master craftsman’s salon in Winsviertel at Stadtplatz Marie

Marienburger Straße 6 is located in Prenzlauer Berg’s Winsviertel, a few steps from Stadtplatz Marie and the Prenzlauer Allee end of the street. Master hairdresser Ingo Nickel has been running his salon here since November 4, 1995, making Gute Schnitte one of the businesses that have witnessed the neighborhood’s transformation from the very beginning. Today, four people work behind the chairs: the owner himself, master hairdresser Nancy, who was trained in-house and recognized as Berlin’s best apprentice, master hairdresser Chung, specializing in updos, men’s cuts, and color changes, and hairdresser Manuela Sievert, who has been with the salon since 1997. Three of them hold master craftsman certificates, which is by no means common in a neighborhood salon of this size. For consultation, the business has coined its own term: Kiezcutting means that there’s a conversation first, and then cutting, coloring, or extending. Because the salon has been operating in the same location for three decades and is continuously looking for apprentices, the clientele is accordingly mixed.

Clear price structure and a wide range of services

Gute Schnitte consistently prices services by hair length and openly explains that the time and material effort increase with length. A women’s haircut costs between 48 and 64 Euros, a men’s haircut between 33 and 42 Euros. Additionally, there are dry cuts, children’s cuts, washing and blow-drying, and two variations where cutting and styling are divided differently. For coloring, options include tinting, natural coloring, highlights with and without foils, and Olaplex as an add-on treatment, complemented by eyebrow and eyelash coloring. More complex work, such as Balayage, perms, and evening and updo hairstyles, is charged based on actual effort. For hair extensions and hair thickening with HairTalk, the salon deliberately does not provide a fixed price, but rather after assessing the client’s own hair and the desired change. The approach to short-notice visits is particularly practical: for a cut, you can just walk in as long as a chair is free. For anything that takes longer, a phone call is recommended, as appointments in the neighborhood are well booked.
