Graffiti Workshop at mygraffitiworkshop: Spray Can Instead of Worksheet

The session doesn’t start with the spray can, but with a one-hour tour through Berlin’s street art scene. The guides show styles and techniques and explain how graffiti spread from New York in the seventies and came to Germany in the eighties. All workshop leaders are Berlin writers themselves, with decades of experience.

Afterward, the wall is prepared, primed, and divided among the groups. Only in the third part do the young people pick up the spray can themselves. In total, the program for school classes lasts about four hours. The provider supplies spray cans, caps, full-body protective suits, and masks, as well as pens, paper, primer, and rollers.

Spraying Your Own Motif: Conditions for School Classes in Berlin

Each class first designs their motif with pen and paper before moving to the wall. Often, the school name or class motto is created using self-drawn letters. The workshop teaches color theory, handling the spray can, and the knowledge of how a New York subculture became a Berlin urban language.

The workshop costs 29 Euros per young person and is designed for grades 7 to 13; accompanying teachers pay nothing. 15 to 150 young people can participate simultaneously, supervised in groups of a maximum of 30 per professional sprayer. Bookings are made in advance, school classes pay by invoice, and cancellations are free of charge up to seven days before the appointment. Spraying takes place even in light drizzle; in heavy rain, it will be postponed or refunded. The workshop is offered in German, English, and Spanish.
