Kastanienallee between Eberswalder Straße and Zionskirchplatz is one of Prenzlauer Berg’s most frequented streets, and hair has been cut at house number 16 for over 70 years. Operating under the name Vokuhila, the salon has been there since January 2000, meaning the establishment looks back on a quarter-century of its own history. It is managed by Nikita Ebardt, master hairdresser and business administrator, with a team of 15 people ranging from trainees to master stylists, internally known as Voku-Fam. The original eighties interior has been deliberately retained, giving the shop a character that no renovation could replicate. The salon states its mission unusually clearly: it aims to be a safe space and sees itself as a quiet resistance against interchangeability. Sustainability is not an add-on but an integral part of their work, from product selection to locally produced curlers for their proprietary perming technique. Those who sit here quickly realize that consultation and attitude belong together. Since early 2026, the salon has also been an independent company again, operating separately from its former sister business.

Gender-Neutral Prices Based on Length and Qualification

The pricing structure is the second reason Vokuhila stands out. Instead of separating by women and men, the salon categorizes by four length packages and by the qualification of the person cutting, from New Talent to Stylist, Top Stylist, and Master. A cut for fine, short to chin-length hair starts at 47.50 Euros, the most elaborate transformation with a master stylist is 113.50 Euros, and each package is assigned a time slot, so you know how long the appointment will take. Additional services include the Calligraphy Cut or beard care. In the color section, the offerings range from classic coloration, bleaching, and balayage to a vegan plant-based color from Wella, which is ammonia-free and offered for grey blending in two coverage levels. For curls, there’s a proprietary perming technique with custom curlers. Major color changes require a paid consultation appointment, the price of which is partially credited towards a larger subsequent booking. While this may seem unusual at first glance, it ensures that the actual treatment is realistically planned and not improvised in the chair.
