UpCycle Berlin: When Construction Wood Becomes Design Furniture

The idea arose from a simple necessity: André came to Berlin in 2011 after art school, found some planks on one of the city’s many construction sites, and transformed them into a bed. Thus, the first UpCycle Berlin furniture was born. Since then, this pragmatic impulse has evolved into a serious Kreuzberg studio. The concept consciously leverages Berlin’s passion for construction: all upcycled furniture is exclusively made from old Berlin construction wood. Otherwise, construction companies would have to dispose of their timber at a cost. Instead, UpCycle Berlin buys up the old planks and processes them into individual design furniture with unmistakable character.

By law, construction planks in Germany are not allowed to be treated with chemicals to prevent pollutants from entering the groundwater. This means it is untreated natural wood. So, those who want to furnish sustainably get two arguments at once here.

Custom Furniture to Order, Directly from the Workshop

The shop offers individual custom design furniture made from old Berlin construction wood: beds, tables, shelves, and various small furniture items. Every piece of furniture is created in the Kreuzberg studio following the upcycling philosophy: old material is handcrafted into a unique piece, deliberately preserving its patina and traces of time. Residents of Berlin can even go a step further: visitors have the opportunity to choose the wood directly in the workshop and help decide the color tone. This is individual furnishing in its most consistent form. The team takes quality control seriously: every piece of furniture is checked for the condition of the wood and its surface is refined before it leaves the workshop.
