Forty Stores Under One Roof

If you get off the S-Bahn at Savignyplatz, it’s not far to a building that radically shortens your search for furnishings. LIVING Berlin on Kantstraße brings together around forty stores and brand showrooms across five floors, and the spectrum is deliberately kept complete: from floor to ceiling, from lighting to sound systems, from fitted furniture to accessories and decoration. Five floors sound like a lot, but they are clearly arranged because each level has its own focus. The tenant list includes names like Vitra and USM, Ligne Roset, Roche Bobois, ROLF BENZ, TEAM 7, BoConcept, and Bretz, as well as kitchen specialists like Poggenpohl and bulthaup, the parquet specialist Bauwerk, the C. Bechstein Centrum, and Bang & Olufsen. Instead of driving halfway across the city in an afternoon, you can compare sofas, kitchens, and lamps in the same building. The fact that LIVING Berlin does not sell itself but assigns the space to the brands has a pleasant side effect: in every store, you are advised by people who exclusively know and represent their own program.

From Bank Building to Design District

The building was completed in 1999, on the site of the former administration building of the Dresdener Bank, designed by the offices of Nowotny Mähner & Assoziierte from Berlin and Studio & Partners from Milan. Since 2021, the building has borne its current name, and in 2024, the completely redesigned main entrance was opened, marking the conclusion of several years of modernization. In its approximately twenty-five years of existence, it has established and continues to shape Berlin’s Design District. Getting there is convenient: S Savignyplatz and Zoologischer Garten station are each about four hundred meters away, and bus M49 stops at Uhlandstraße, allowing a visit to be easily combined with a stroll along Ku’damm. Those arriving by car will find a car park in the basement, accessible via Uhlandstraße; bicycle stands are located next to the main entrance. Upstairs, a rooftop and a bistro invite you to take a break between two showrooms. A tour of all floors is sufficient for an initial overview; for a purchase decision, more time should be planned to specifically seek out showrooms.
