Lichterglanz the candle manufacturer is located at Räuschstraße 17A in Reinickendorf, a few minutes from the Holzhauser Straße subway station on the U6 line; bus lines X33, 125, and 133 also stop nearby. From the outside, the shop looks unassuming; inside, candles are stacked up to the ceiling.

The manufactory is run by Susanne Nagies and Gerald Knüppel. Each candle is made individually by hand, which is why no two are alike. In the sales room, you’ll find pillar candles in many colors, mosaic candles, hand-dipped candles, star candles, scented candles, and hand-potted clay oil lamps, as well as candle wall holders, tealight glasses, Starlightz lights, and gift items such as jewelry, vases, and soaps. A pillar candle with colored wax pieces, about six centimeters in diameter, burns for approximately 32 hours. Because work is done in small batches, colors and patterns change constantly, and during Advent, scents like winter plum and mulled wine are added.

Make your own Christmas candles: Dipping, Pouring, and 14 Colors

The special thing about this location is that you can make the candles yourself. In the dipping process, a wick is repeatedly dipped into hot wax, the candle grows layer by layer and can become up to 60 centimeters long. For pouring, a selection of molds is available; the finished candle needs to cool for a long time and is picked up the following day. Paraffin in 14 colors, which can be freely combined, is used, and a session lasts about an hour. Appointments are given exclusively by phone.

Candle making costs from 15 Euros per person. For groups of 15 to 25 people, for school classes, and for kindergarten groups from pre-school age, there are special appointments where each child makes at least one two-colored pair of candles; a pair costs 6 Euros there. In addition, the manufactory offers workshops on wax bowls, lanterns, and candle decorating, as well as individually designed occasion candles for baptisms, weddings, anniversaries, and funerals. If you don’t have the time or patience for dipping, you can instead buy an already pre-dipped blank and just decorate it yourself.
