Hacker und Presting Buchhandlung

Julia Hacker has been running the Hacker und Presting bookstore since 1997 on Leonhardtstraße in the Charlottenburg neighborhood, near Amtsgerichtsplatz. On approximately 60 square meters, adorned with stucco and coral-red shelves, the focus is on fiction and children's books. Ordered titles are usually ready for pickup by the next morning, and shipping costs three euros.

The Hacker und Presting bookstore is located on Leonhardtstraße in Charlottenburg, a quiet residential street with cafés and old trees. Amtsgerichtsplatz with the Charlottenburg District Court is about two hundred meters away, Lietzenseepark about six hundred, and Stuttgarter Platz and Kantstraße are within walking distance. The shop itself measures approximately sixty square meters and makes visible use of them: high ceilings, large sash windows, plenty of stucco, and coral-red shelves. Since its founding, the logo has featured a black greyhound on a red background instead of the industry’s usual owl, which the establishment attributes to its love for animals.

The bookstore was founded in 1997 by Julia Hacker and Ulrike Presting; since 2018, Julia Hacker has run it alone. She also operates the Akazienbuchhandlung in Schöneberg, which was awarded the German Bookstore Prize at the end of 2023. Directions: Charlottenburg train station at Stuttgarter Platz is about five hundred meters away, plus the U2 at Sophie-Charlotte-Platz and the U7 at Wilmersdorfer Straße. Since December 2025, the area has belonged to parking zone 130, where parking costs two euros per hour and was previously free.

Fiction, Children’s Books, and Next-Morning Pickup

At the heart of the assortment are fiction and children’s books, supplemented by non-fiction, art and culture volumes, English-language literature, and greeting cards. Among the books, you’ll find small non-book items such as scented soaps and handmade ceramic bowls. The Hacker und Presting bookstore compensates for its modest size with its order catalog, from which approximately four million titles can be ordered, even as a guest order without a customer account.

The pickup promise is convenient: in-stock titles are ready for pickup by the next morning, out-of-stock titles usually by the next day, and no shipping costs apply for pickup. Those who opt for delivery pay three euros for domestic shipping; above a certain order value, delivery is free. Additionally, there are vouchers and a gift service with selectable paper and greeting cards, where each item is individually wrapped. Recommendations are also available in writing: Author Malin Schwerdtfeger’s weekly literary courier addresses a specific topic and combines it with tips from the store.
