Café Einstein Unter den Linden: Viennese Coffee House Culture on the Grand Boulevard

Café Einstein Unter den Linden originated in 1996 when Gerald Uhlig, originally from Vienna, founded it. Inspired by classic Viennese coffee houses, he created a meeting point for connoisseurs, intellectuals, and politicians. In early 2016, new operators took over the café and carefully modernized it without altering the original charm. Thus, the space still feels like an elegant time capsule, with artful furniture, dark wood paneling, and old artworks.

Here, guests from business, society, culture, and politics meet, as do international visitors to Berlin. Those visiting the city with parents or relatives will find a harmonious blend of Berlin’s history and urban sophistication. The ambiance is never intimidating, but rather invitingly distinguished.

Austrian Cuisine and Viennese Coffee Specialties

Half a page of the menu is exclusively dedicated to coffee: Fiaker, Einspänner, Melange, and kleiner Brauner are available. The breakfast menu ranges from delicate pastries and freshly brewed coffee to hearty omelets. All cakes and dishes are prepared fresh daily and without pre-made products.

The house classics are carefully reinterpreted, such as Austrian vinegar dumplings with red onions and pumpkin seed oil. And as befits a Viennese coffee house, there is a truly good apple strudel and many other cakes from its own bakery. Coming here with parents or grandparents for coffee and cake is one of the most straightforward and stylish activities in Berlin-Mitte.
