Viktoriapark in Kreuzberg features a real waterfall, a vineyard, and Berlin's highest inner-city hill. Strolling here means walking through over 130 years of city history, and the sound of the water automatically makes any small talk a bit easier.

About Viktoriapark

Viktoriapark is one of Berlin’s oldest and most historic parks. It is considered the masterpiece of Berlin’s garden director Hermann Mächtig and opened its gates in 1894. It was named after the English princess and later Queen of Prussia, Victoria, wife of Emperor Frederick III. The complex is the only almost completely preserved Berlin city park from the Historicist period.

Viktoriapark is home to Berlin’s Kreuzberg, the city’s highest inner-city elevation, at 66 meters. At the top stands the National Monument, designed by the famous Prussian master builder Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It commemorates the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon. Furthermore, from April to October, nowhere else in the city does a waterfall roar like it does here. It is a replica of a waterfall from the Giant Mountains, recreated as accurately as possible with geological studies.

If you need a break after the climb: within the 13-hectare park area, you’ll find the “Golgatha” beer garden, a popular spot with a sun terrace and Hollywood swings. In the evenings and at night, the beer garden is a magnet for the Kreuzberg party crowd when DJs usher in the famous “Kreuzberg Nights” there. And there’s more waiting directly in the vicinity: along Kreuzbergstraße, you reach the famous Bergmannstraße with small shops, cafes, and Marheinekeplatz.

Why is Viktoriapark a Great Spot for a First Date?

A first date needs one thing above all: a good, no-pressure atmosphere. Viktoriapark delivers exactly that. In rainy weather, the park becomes a place for romantics. And on sunny days, it goes without saying.

The park also offers plenty of natural conversation starters. In the center of the dreamlike Wolfsschlucht (Wolf’s Gorge) lies a picturesquely designed pond, into which three springs ripple. Those who walk the path from here up to the highest point of Kreuzberg will be rewarded with a magnificent view. This creates a small shared accomplishment – the climb – and once at the top, there’s definitely something to talk about.

Furthermore, there’s the ultimate insider tip: In addition to one of Berlin’s most beautiful sunsets, Kreuzberg in Viktoriapark offers a mysterious place that is only open on a few days of the year. As soon as the pygmy bats finish their hibernation at the end of March, Frank Körner opens the heavy iron door for a handful of visitors and offers insights into the catacombs beneath the Schinkel Monument. While not a classic date program, it is an absolutely unforgettable shared experience.

If you still have time afterwards: A detour to Bergmannstraße is worthwhile, as one of Berlin’s most charming neighborhoods awaits there with cafes, restaurants, and the Marheinekeplatz market. Thus, a park stroll can quickly turn into an entire evening for two.
