A Garden on the Spree Behind Old Walls

In Köpenick’s Old Town, not far from the water, stands an ensemble of historic buildings called freiheit fünfzehn. From the street, little of it is noticeable; only behind the gate does a garden open directly onto the Spree, with lounge furniture, deck chairs, and views of passing boats. A two-masted ship from 1891, the Ars Vivendi, is moored at the bank, providing a backdrop for which other places would charge admission. Because the old houses shield the garden from the street, it remains remarkably quiet here, and you don’t have to contend with traffic noise when talking. Grilling and tap drinks are available on-site, along with snacks and beverages in the garden. Reservations are not possible there, and payment is in cash, so one should be prepared for that. Those who prefer to sit indoors will find a ballroom and a bar in the house, which operate even in wind and rain.

A Program That Takes Over the Conversation

The second reason to come here is the program. freiheit fünfzehn hosts a quiz night called “Raten im Garten” (Guessing in the Garden), where teams of two to four people compete, which is perfect for a couple: you don’t sit silently next to each other, but rather have to agree on answers together. Admission is 10 Euros at the door, and you must register in advance because seats are limited. Additionally, there are bingo nights, themed parties, concerts and readings, an open-air cinema, and a Christmas market; tickets for parties start at 12 Euros in advance. In case of bad weather, the venue moves into the ballroom, so an evening here doesn’t depend on the skies. If you’re still hungry afterward, there’s a burger joint right next door that even cooperates with the quiz night, offering a discount to guests with a reservation confirmation. If you want to end the evening quietly, simply stay in the garden and watch the boats until it gets dark. Köpenick’s Old Town surrounding the venue also invites you for a stroll afterward.
