Historische U-Bahnfahrt am Alexanderplatz

Right at Alexanderplatz in Mitte, time briefly stands still: The historic subway ride on the U5 lets travelers dive into the city's underground in vintage trains from the 1920s and 1930s.
About the Historic Subway Ride at Alexanderplatz
The historic C2 train of the Berlin U-Bahn working group from 1929/30 operates on special trips on subway line 5. The journeys start and end at Alexanderplatz station. Anyone standing on the platform there and watching the train pull in will briefly feel like they’ve stepped into a black-and-white film. Conductors in dark green original uniforms check tickets before boarding, and the doors are closed by hand. The two carriages from the 1920s begin to move with a gentle jolt. The seats inside are covered with shiny red upholstery fabric, and the carriages themselves are fitted with light, polished wood.
To keep the rich heritage of the Berlin U-Bahn alive, the BVG maintains an impressive collection of historic subway cars, which are meticulously preserved and cared for by the U-Bahn working group. The Class C carriages were large-profile vehicles that were in service from 1926, making them among the oldest still operational trains in German public transport. In their time, these vehicles were the most modern in the Berlin U-Bahn network and are accordingly a rare historical document today. After the ride, there’s still much to discover around Alexanderplatz: Karl-Marx-Allee with its imposing socialist architecture is in the immediate vicinity, as are Museum Island and the TV Tower.
Why is the Historic Subway Ride at Alexanderplatz a great place for a first date?
Because a first date primarily needs one thing: a conversation starter. And that comes naturally here. Even before the train departs, there’s plenty to marvel at. The vintage train, the conductors’ uniforms, the creaking and rumbling upon departure – all of this creates an atmosphere that no restaurant in the world can replicate. During special trips, these characterful carriages unfold their special charm, and the history of the Berlin U-Bahn truly comes alive.
Moreover, the Historic Subway Ride at Alexanderplatz is not a passive pastime. You sit close together, look out the window into dark tunnel tubes, and the train gently rocks you through the city’s history. This creates closeness without it feeling forced. On selected dates, lovingly restored vintage trains from the 1920s to 1960s are used. Since the special trips do not take place daily, the whole experience also has something special about it. You have to plan in advance, which shows: someone really put thought into this. If you still feel like it after the ride, you can end the evening in one of the many bars and restaurants around Alexanderplatz. The first date will then already have a story that you’ll be telling for a long time.
